What do they have in common?
Did you know that Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Post Malone, and Elon Musk (Tesla) have something in common besides being some of the wealthiest people in the world? They are all rumored to have or be building doomsday bunkers. Rumor has it that Mark Zuckerberg's underground bunker is up to 5000 square feet and cost him over 200 million dollars. And they're not alone—searches for bunkers online have surged in recent times.
Maybe they are being silly or paranoid. But what if they're onto something? There are all kinds of threats out there that could lead to some seriously bad stuff, and it feels like there are more and more of them every day.
Consider dictators like Kim Jong Un and leaders like Putin, who have openly threatened to use nuclear weapons. Should we dismiss these threats as a bluff? What if Putin, feeling threatened or cornered, decides to follow through on his threats? Or if Kim Jong Un, fearing for his regime's survival, takes drastic action? While we may have defenses in place to intercept some attacks, the fallout could be devastating. The radiation alone could be catastrophic.Bunkers aren't just for nuclear attacks; they could also be life-saving in the event of a terrorist attack. Our society is vulnerable on many fronts, from attacks on our power grid to cyber-attacks that could cripple our infrastructure. The consequences of such attacks could be dire, leading to widespread civil unrest and shortages of essential resources like food, water, and medicine.
This is just the tip of the iceberg in the need to be prepared. Everything is so fragile. When Covid happened it really exposed to me the vulnerability of the country in an instant. Supply chains, jobs, sickness, the government shutdown and we are still paying for it. What if the next pandemic is a 1% death rate. Imagine a 10% death rate or higher?
While Mark Zuckerberg's bunker may be extravagant costing hundreds of millions of dollars, there are more affordable options available. Basic underground bunkers start at around $10,000, providing short-term shelter for a few individuals. In a world where the unexpected can happen at any moment, having a safe haven to retreat to may not seem so far-fetched after all.
